5 Health Benefits You’re Missing if You Don’t Detox

If you’ve like me and you’re busy running from one place to the next—from work to the gym to daycare to home to make dinner to get up and repeat—you have probably fallen into completing many tasks on autopilot. The problem is, often as we stop being intentional with tasks, our habits start to slip. We cut corners or think, “I’ll do it tomorrow”. One that is easily relatable to me here is flossing my teeth—I think, “I’ll just do it tomorrow…for like 4 days in a row”. Just me?!??! Okay then… Our other areas of health can also fall into this trap as well. I start to eat what’s in the pantry instead of being intentional about prepping healthier meals and snacks, and before I know it, my overall health is struggling. Time for a reset!

If you aren’t periodically assessing your habits and setting new goals, then you’re likely to fall into this trap as well. If you are stagnant, you aren’t continuing to grow, and like most areas of life, few of us have achieved master level health management because everything around us starts to pick away at that—convenient foods loaded with inflammatory ingredients (see previous blog about hidden sugars in your foods), excessive sitting at a computer limiting our movement and our sunlight, and an always on mentality affecting our ability to slow our brains and get rid of stress. Changing it up allows us to audit your routine and challenge to raise to the next level. Here are 5 vital reasons you may want to try a detox and reset plan soon!

  1. Better sleep - detoxification happens in two phases, and they require a significant amount of support from the body in order to happen in the form of nutrients to create the vital components for the process.  Much of that process can happen at night so removing the toxic load in addition to providing the right support for your body’s detox process can dramatically improve sleep which will then improve your detox process. It’s a vicious cycle that can cause waking up in the middle of the night if it’s disrupted. Getting detoxification right may help you start sleeping through the night and waking feeling rested and restored.

  2. Gain energy - the liver is the body’s detox organ, and if we over tax it with exposure to poor foods, excess chemicals, or chronic stress, we can start to see it slow down and get sluggish.  By removing the foods such as simple sugars and alcohol and adding fruits and vegetables that support the liver as well as some potential supplements to enhance detoxification, we can start to run smoothly again. In return, you may start to feel like you still have energy to spare at the end of the day.

  3. Think clearer - by improving the body’s detox process as well as reducing foods that affect insulin spikes and the like, you will likely feel mentally clearer and more alert–better work days, more efficient processes, leaving you more time for whatever you need or want to do. If you’re finding yourself needing a pot of coffee to get through your day, this might be your sign!

  4. Feel lighter - improving digestion along with reducing inflammation as you heal your gut and remove toxins will likely leave you feeling slimmer and moving more freely.  This isn’t by accident as your body’s reaction to the daily over-exposure to inflammatory foods can have you retaining water while the toxins have you retaining fit tissue to disperse them. Whether we are talking about water soluble or fat soluble toxins, the body will no longer need to hold on to the extra if you don’t have the build up of toxins needing to be managed.

  5. Dump toxins - as your detoxification process improves, your body will be able to remove things that we don’t want circulating–this could be a combination of excess hormones that have been housed in excess fat tissue, chemicals from daily exposure, or other excessive stress the body is placed under.  By adding a high fiber diet rich in phytonutrients to optimize your detox process and supporting that process with the proper supplementation, your body will excrete those toxins through the skin, colon, and lungs.  This is why it’s critical that you stay regular in the bathroom and move your body everyday, but particularly as you detox, as the exchange of toxins happens through sweat, bowel movements, and breathing.
